The state-wise details of total area of land acquired by the National Highways Authority of India for the development of National Highways in the country during the last three years i.e. 2011-12, 2012-13 & 2013-14 is given in the attached table.
Issues in acquisition of land varying from project to project, in various States, such as, delay in appointment of competent authority, frequent transfer of competent authority, disputes with competent authorities regarding method of payment of compensation, delay in valuation of structures and other assets in consultation and coordination with other departments, outdated and inaccessible revenue records, delay in arbitration, pending court cases, etc., coming to the notice of the Government are addressed in consultation with the State Governments.
Building, maintenance, operation and management of National Highways, acquisition of land and payment of compensation is given after passing of award by the Competent Authority. A well laid down dispute resolution mechanism exists in the relevant National Highways Act, 1956, under which the land is acquired for National Highway projects.
